(1) In the early
1840s, California
was a small outpost. Only a few Americans knew about it. Not many people lived
in the sleepy port that would become San
Francisco. One of the richest people living there was
a man named John Sutter. He was from Switzerland. He came to California in 1839. He
had a dream: he wanted to build his own town. He had thousands of cattle, and
he hired hundreds of people to work for him.
(2) More and more
Americans were coming into California.
They came by wagon or by ship. Sutter welcomed all the newcomers, but he had no
idea all these people were going to be a big problem for him soon.
(3) On January 24th, 1848, a man
named James Marshall was building a sawmill for Sutter. The mill was nearly
finished when Marshall
saw something in the sand. Marshall
wrote in his diary: “I reached my hand down and picked it up. It was so
exciting, because I was sure it was gold. It was such a small piece. Then I saw
another.” Marshall
went back to work. But he kept finding more gold.
(4) Marshall took the gold he
found back to Sutter. They tested it and they decided it was gold, but they
weren’t very happy about it. Gold diggers would just get in the way of their
plans. So they decided to keep the discovery a secret. Of course, the news of Marshall’s gold got out,
but at first people didn’t believe it. It was just another fantastic story to
them.
